What Has Latin Done for Me Lately?
So heres the thing... I feel like I did not have enough time to complete the test... first of, I was probably a inute or two late, but that did not affect me too much. The fact that ms. Eleni said we had five minutes at the end kind of put me in panic mode... thus I made a bunch of silly mistakes....
does the test time have to be longer, or was it just my relative lack of speed in completing the test???

let me know...

On quizzes:

(I am responding to both Stacey and Jeremy, but as a starting point to address these issues for everyone).

--Quizzes are between 5 and 10 minutes long. If I tell you take 10 minutes, they will end up taking 15. If I tell you 5 you will think on your toes and we will finish in time. Being late in class doesn't help. Not only because one loses time, but because they get into that panic mode that precipitates the mistakes. I arrive in class at 1 and sometimes even later! Be there before me, unless you have a class right before, in which case let's talk about it. The overwhelmingajority of the class completes the quiz long before time is up. That's why I look at your faces, I ask if everyone is done etc.

--Studying for the quiz: No need to know the format of the quiz in advance. The things that are being asked are pretty basic, e.g. verb conjugations. If you study carefully the shaded boxes vocabulary (and only that) you should be doing fine. Even if someone fails every single quiz but they do excellent in everything else. They can still get a B for this class. Yes, A is definitely a harder grade to get, and the class is not designed for everyone to get an A.

--Let me remind again that the learning curve for Latin is about 70%steeper than any modern language. The vocabulary accumulates fast and, trust me, it's much better to test it every day than to let it sit without speaking practice (naturally) only to be drawn from the bowels of out minds for the tests.

--It's 6:40 am and I haven't had my coffee yet. Sorry if the tone of this mail sounds grumpy! Do keep posting all your concerns and/or come find me to talk privately over things that you can do with your study methods to make Latin a more pleasant learning experience.

Later, EM.
